"The Arroyo Seco Library Network,
as part of the Library of California, unites the resources of all types
of libraries and the expertise of library staff to serve California residents
more effectively."
- Mission Statement adopted, March 2000
The Library of California was formed by the passage of state legislation
in 1998 to facilitate resource sharing among libraries throughout California.
The Library of California
is comprised of seven regional networks, of which the Arroyo Seco Library
Network is one. Each regional network is organized to develop and deliver
library services among libraries of all types in its region. While member
libraries are expected to continue to provide services and facilities
for their primary clientele, the Library of California is building the
statewide infrastructure to facilitate and enhance resource sharing and
service delivery.
The Arroyo Seco Library Network comprises
the geographic area of Los Angeles and Orange Counties that serve approximately
40% of the state's population. In 1999 a group of libraries within the
area formed the Core Planning Group to begin the development of the network.
Over the next year the group worked to develop a long range plan for the
network, bylaws, resource sharing standards, membership policies, a program
of service, and communication models. Charter members were recruited for
the network and the group plans on submitting a formal request for network
status to the Library of California Board at its meeting in November 2000,
with a requested start for network services in January 2001.
